Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup or coconut sugar (divided)
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (divided)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 cups certified gluten-free rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup gluten-free all-purpose flour blend
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (or coconut oil for dairy-free)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×9 inch baking dish or a similar sized casserole dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with the lemon juice, 1/4 cup of maple syrup (or sugar), 1/2 tablespoon of cinnamon, and the nutmeg. Ensure the apples are evenly coated with the spices and sweetener.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, combine the gluten-free oats, gluten-free flour, the remaining 1/4 cup of maple syrup, the remaining 1/2 tablespoon of cinnamon, salt, and vanilla extract. Add the softened butter and use a fork or your fingers to work it into the dry ingredients until the mixture becomes crumbly.
  4. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading them out into an even layer. Sprinkle the oat crumble mixture generously over the top of the apples, covering them completely.
  5. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes. The topping should be golden brown and the apple filling should be bubbling around the edges. If the topping browns too quickly, you can cover it loosely with foil for the last 10 minutes.
  6. Remove the crisp from the oven and let it cool for about 10 to 15 minutes before serving. This allows the juices to thicken slightly, making it easier to scoop.
